Bingo operator Rank Group has showed signs of optimism as bingo and casino business seem to be growing after twelve difficult months. Also, the company is pleased with changes to come concerning gaming regulations and VAT rulings.

Last year, Rank suffered the effects of the smoking ban and the Gambling Act, and revenues went down 8 per cent in one year. In the last six weeks, spending per head increased, which compensates the decline in attendances.

Ladbrokes, the leading bookmarker in the UK, Ireland and Belgium and a world-leader in remote gambling, has recently launched its latest and definitely most original Bingo ad campaign created by M&C Saatchi.

The campaign involves a bunch of clear Bingo balls which roll around over the streets of Liverpool with players inside, but although this sounds like a new thing, it is actually a sport called sphering or zorbing, where a “prisoner” inside a huge inflatable spherical jail travels down hills.

Bingo for Whizz Kidz

The team leader in the food department at Mecca Bingo, Keri Prowse, was the first one to come up with the idea. She, along with Davina Warden and Kim Pannel, began a sponsored diet at the end of May where, each week, they all step on the scales at the bingo club in front of staff and customers to be weighed.

There’s hardly a better motivation to loose weight than to stand on a scale in front of a group of strangers who anxiously wait for your weekly weight. Before starting the sponsored diet, Keri used to be a size 18 and she is now already down to a size 14.

VAT victory for UK bingos

It was revealed this week that a court decision could mean that the British Revenue and Customs authorities would have to pay a big sum to bingo operators, such as the Rank Group. Apparently, the tribunal considers that Value Added Tax on the bingo activity contravenes European Union regulations.

The Rank Group, owner of Mecca Bingo clubs, filed the case a few months ago claiming that VAT is applied to some bingo machines in the UK but not to all of them, creating a contradiction. According to Rank’s attorneys, the Group paid £36 million more VAT than it should have paid.

Young Cypriots turn to bingo

In the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, teenagers and people in their twenties have ended the myth that bingo is a pastime for senior citizens only. In fact, the majority of youngsters in the country choose this game to spend their nights out in town with their friends.

“This is the one game that brings all the ages together in Cyprus,” commented Nikos, the doorman at a Nicosia bingo club. This venue is inside a building that used to be a cinema and that now looks like a miniature version of a casino with high-end technology, including flat screens and digital boards.
